The bilateral meeting focused on the role of APN-PAD as the regional voice and hub for People of African within the First and potentially Second International Decade for People of African Descent. APN-PAD and OHCHR also discussed future partnerships and collaborations on the human rights situations of People of African Descent, as well empowering APN-PAD regional advocacy, awareness raising, subregional and regional engagements on the program of activities of the First International Decade under the themes of Recognition, Justice, and Development for People of African Descent.
According to UN Senior fellow Christian Fonye, chairperson APN-PAD board of directors, the bilateral meeting was the first of its kind since the proclamation of the First International Decade for People of African Descent. It demonstrates the strategic importance of APN-PAD as an experienced grassroots organisation with experts on key issues of the human rights situation of People of African Descent in the Asia Pacific region . There is clear potential for APN-PAD to act as a regional hub for the empowerment of People of African Descent and the expansion of the space for diversity, inclusion and equality in the region.
The bilateral meeting ended with a plan to hold evaluative meetings every two years at the international level and yearly at the regional level.
